Being home for the summer I was in search of activities to be done at home in order to keep my son busy. Being hands on and staying active are things he thrives on.
For his birthday he received sidewalk chalk paint. It was a fun, new way to decorate the driveway. Just add water and stir. Easy enough. It even came with a tray that resembled one used with real paint, and fun rollers. The downside was that it was basically a one or two time use. I kept the tray and rollers for future use, with hopes that I could recreate the sidewalk chalk paint.
To save on money and recreate the sidewalk chalk paint, here is a DIY (do it yourself) recipe. It only requires 3 ingredients, many of which you probably already have in your home. In addition you will need cups or containers to mix the paint. The quickest and easiest thing I had in my home were solo cups. You will also need something to stir it with such as a popsicle stick or spoon. Based on the ingredients and that it is homemade you don’t have to worry about any dangerous potency. The only dangers here are the food coloring! That gets me to my last tip…rubber gloves. My son grabbed the red food coloring before we could get to him at one point which basically made it look as if he had murdered someone.
The 3 simple ingredients you need are:
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup water
- food coloring
Helpful items to have include:
- cups or container for each color
- paint brushes or rollers
- popsicle sticks or spoon (for stirring)
- gloves for the artist and mixer
Using this activity doubles as a way to teach your child how to measure, similar to when you are teaching them to cook. Keep the supplies in stock and you are ready to go any day of the week. Enjoy and let me know if you’ve had success with the recipe.
