When it comes to breastfeeding it has its advantages and its sacrifices. I’ve breastfed both of my children, still currently with my second child, and one of the biggest sacrifices is time. Time to breastfeed in the middle of the night and cluster feedings. Time to have the right clothes and nursing bras, and making sure they’re clean when you need them. Time to do your research. Time to wait for your milk to come in after delivery. Time to “get it” and make sure your latch is right. Time to pump. Time thinking about if you’ve pumped enough, or when you’ll squeeze your next pumping session into your work schedule. Then at the end of the day you come home and have to make sure you have time to clean all your pumping materials.
Are you overwhelmed yet? True, there is so much that goes into breastfeeding and pumping. The pros far outweigh the cons for me and for those of us that make it work or are in the middle of it struggling to make it work. The time dedicated to breastfeeding and all that comes with it have been a commitment I have made. Pumping isn’t my favorite thing, and to be honest I’ve had a countdown in my head of how many months until she’s 1 year old so I can stop pumping.
One of the worst parts is at the end of the day I have to put time aside to clean or sanitize all of the pumping parts in order to prepare for the next day. If you’re lucky you have enough back up parts to make it through the day or to the next day. Realistically the second time around there is more attention to the kids, husband, dog, and needs of the house and even less time to clean.
One of the ways I’ve found pumping and cleaning the parts more manageable is using the Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags. They – are – a -lifesaver for me this week. Here’s how it works. Each bag can be reused 20 times. There is a tracking box on the back making it easy for you to keep track of how many times you’ve used it and when you’re maxed out at your 20. It only takes a few seconds to pour in at least 2 oz of water, add your bottles or pumping parts, and through in the microwave for 3 minutes. The bags act as a disinfectant for items such as pumping accessories, bottles, nipples, and pacifiers.
I just love these bags, especially with baby #2 and having less time on my hands. The Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags can essentially be brought anywhere you’d have access to a microwave…work, school, friend’s houses, and your own home. A quick few minutes in the microwave and they’re ready to be reused the same day. I highly recommend adding this to your baby list and believe me it can be a time saver.
